The ?City of Diamonds?, as Amsterdam was once known has been offered a special elite glamour by being the host of some of the most valuable and expensive diamonds in the world. It is not only that Amsterdam is only one of the major jewelry centers around the globe, but also it has had a rich history and tradition in the manufacture of rare gems. Sephardic Jews were the clan who brought Diamond cutting to Amsterdam at the end of the 16th century. However it gathered and experienced great popularity as well as development among locals and foreigners very soon.

There are hundreds of gifted cutters and polishers in Amsterdam who transform rough diamonds into precious, priceless gems and jewelry. If the tourist desires than the daring tourists can take part in one of the most dazzling metamorphoses. Visitors are given the chance to assist diamond manufacturers in the process of diamond cutting first-hand and witness, thus, more than four hundred years of evolution in an almost mystical field.

The craftsmanship and tradition of diamond in Amsterdam can be certified by many important works which has been done in Amsterdam. The ?Cullinan?, the diamond which has the largest size in the world was cut in the old Amsterdam. It is a work of art to see these beautiful pieces. ?Koh-I-Noor? meaning The Mountain of Light, and is among the collection of Crown Jewels of England was also cut and polished in old Amsterdam. All these have been turned into genuine art pieces. The smallest diamond in the world with only 0.00012 carat weight was cut in the city. Though small in size it is very valuable due to its 57 facets.

One is spoilt for choice in the city of diamonds. If one wants to buy or just wants to assist in the production of diamonds, there are plenty of places like the shops – Gassan Diamonds, Amsterdam Diamond Center, Van Moppes Diamonds, Stoeltie Diamonds and Coster Diamonds. All these shops not only welcome visitors but also are happy to receive their guests and introduce them in the bright universe of world-class gems.

Van Moopes Diamonds is the diamonds shop which was the first to introduce visitors in 1955 so as to let them watch and assist the process of diamond cutting and polishing every day. If customers decide upon a diamond or jewelry, craftsmen can adapt it to personal preferences o the spot, so lucky buyers can enjoy it as soon as possible.

One of the oldest diamond shops is the Coster Diamonds. It is much more than a diamond and jewelry center. It has the privilege of being one of Amsterdam?s oldest diamond factories bearing the blaze of tradition and high quality. It has more than 160 years of experience in the diamond industry. Coster Diamonds can proud of the fact that it has re- polished one of the largest diamonds in the world, Great Britain?s crown jewel, Koh-I-Noor. Coster Diamonds is the favorite destination of thousands of tourists every year in search of beholding how world?s most valuable gems take shape. Dedicated craftsmen are ready to share the secrets of how cutting and polishing needs to be done to bring out the best of a diamond. Tours are free of charge and multilingual.

With its maze of narrow streets, 17th-century canal houses, rich history, listed buildings, quirky boutiques and bars, the Jordaan is one of Amsterdam?s most popular areas not only with the artists and designers who frequent the district, but with people wanting to experience a true piece of Amsterdam. In the Nine Lanes one can buy anything from 1940s cocktail glasses and retro memorabilia to fine wines, home interiors and funky clothes. Noordermarkt is a lively square, hosting weekly flea and organic farmer?s markets, surrounded by bars and caf?s where visitors can kick back and watch weird and wonderful Amsterdammers at work and play. The district is in the west of the city and is bordered by Lijnbaansgracht on one side and Prinsengracht on the other.

The Amsterdam Jordaan is undoubtedly the most sung about, described and romanced town district in Amsterdam. Started as a district for the poor, today it is a favorite place for students, artists and young professionals. This new inhabitants of the Jordaan, together with the people that stayed behind from the early days, made this neighborhood a pleasant place with a mixture of all kinds of styles and activities.

Many people wonder where the name Jordaan comes from. The most heard explanation is that the word has been derived from the French jardin (garden). The French immigrants of the 17th century might have called the district Jardin, because the most of the streets of the Jordaan are named after to flowers.

Some say that the name has been inspired by the river Jordaan, the well-known water from the holy land. Historian Kannegieter is convinced that the name comes from the French river the Jordanne in the Auvergne. The historian explains that the french compared this polluted river with the Prinsengracht, which at that time also was not too clean itself.

During daytime Jordaan blessed with a total absence of tourist honey pots – is remarkably peaceful strolling territory. The Bloemgracht canal is considered to be the city?s prettiest, and the Jordaan?s market scene offers diversions and temptations.

The best way to see Amsterdam is from the water. To get the best sight a range of boat excursions can be booked at the information offices of Amsterdam Tourist & Convention Board. There is lot of choice it can either be a jazz cruise, or an architecture trip or even a trip by Museum Boat. There is a wide range of excursions in and around Amsterdam. There is so much choice that one is spoilt for choice. Though Amsterdam itself is a good tourist destination, it does not mean that you can?t go sightseeing outside the city limits.

In addition to tours through the city, various excursions take a person to towns and places of interest around Amsterdam. One can go to Marken, Edam, Alkmaar and the windmills of Zaanse Schans, the Keukenhof and Waterland.

The type of excursion a person is planning will be the base for booking any trip. Is the outing with a group of friends, relatives or colleagues? One can book many group excursions available from the tourist information office. A bike tour which goes along many surprising sights in or around Amsterdam may be just what a person is looking for. There is enough choice to even arrange an all-inclusive theme parties, such as a typically Dutch party or a Rembrandt Night.

To say that Amsterdammers are avid cyclists is a bit of an understatement. There are some 400km of bike paths in the city alone. These paths give top priority to cyclists, and nowhere is the humble cycle so revered, here even cars and pedestrians come a poor second. To have a local’s perspective on the city, one can just hire a bike and go along the way one wants to.

The Vondelpark is an exquisite place for a stroll or a jog, particularly in spring, however if one wants more of a serious leg-stretch, the sprawling Amsterdamse Bos is the place to head. The lover of skating can get to skate on frozen canals and the Museumplein pond during the winter, though if a person goes in the Jaap Edenbaan indoor and outdoor rinks instead. The healthy atmosphere of Amsterdam gives everyone a chance to be a tourist as well as to be fit.

The historical character of the Artis zoo is quite apparent even before one enters the gates of the zoo. It is the oldest zoo with two golden eagles perched proudly atop the main entrance. One can enjoy the 19th-century atmosphere of the gardens: the winding paths, majestic trees, the fascinating sculptures and the monumental historical buildings.

Artis is not only a zoo but a haven of peace and quiet right in the city centre of Amsterdam. Artis having an area of 14 hectares around with 700 species of animals is a fascinating zoo providing a magnificent overview of the entire animal kingdom. Amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds, mammals and insects… all are superbly represented.

The Aquarium at the Artis zoo brings one face to face with the secret life of Amsterdam’s canals! One can find many Dutch and European animal and plant species, along with more exotic species. The Planetarium, the museums and all kinds of smaller exhibitions is there for any person who wants to gain knowledge.

Its atmospheric, 19th century character with ponds, ancient formal gardens and trees makes Artis ideally suited to the casual stroller. Alongside the Predator Gallery, the original design of an English stately home garden gives way to the Classical ‘French Gardens’ (laid out in 1891), called the Dutch Garden. The eight-meter high Westerman monument commemorates Artis’s founder. Marble statues of the Four Seasons border this geometrical garden.

Few zoos are as well endowed with listed buildings as Artis. Twenty of historical monuments bear diamond-shaped plaques with an inscription from a bygone age. Some examples are the Large Museum (1855), the Library building (1867) and the Aquarium (1882). The romantic Masmanhuisje predates the foundation of Artis (1838). It now houses the ibises. The stroll is made even more romantic by a visit to the two, larger than life, 18th century Bodhisatva statues (also known as Buddhas). These were brought to Artis from Japan more than a century ago. These Sculptures which are exhibited all over the park, along with a Japanese garden offers restful moments away from exciting city life.

Fancy a sunny day out at the beach? Well, if you?re in Amsterdam, you don?t have to travel out to Zandvoort or Bloemendaal any more. Amsterdam is quite well-off in the trendy beaches sector. Beaches like Blijburg, Amsterdam Plage and the brand-new Strand West are all in Amsterdam itself. Apart from beaches Amsterdam also has other amazing places where one can kick back and sunbathe during summer without getting so much as a grain of sand between the toes.

Blijburg aan Zee is a sandy beach on the new IJburg island complex. Not only does Blijburg have a pleasant beach, it also has a beach caf? with a bar and an open kitchen. Every Sunday there is a performance by a DJ or a country band. It is on the new islands in the East of Amsterdam. Only this beach allows swimming officially allowed. One can find a caf? or a restaurant on the beach itself.

Amsterdam?s newest stylist city beach is Strand West. It?s a wide sandy beach with a panoramic view over the waters of the IJ. One can laze in a hammock or beanbag, drink a cocktail, eat tapas or play beach volleyball with friends and colleagues. Children can ride on the giant stride or enjoy the view from the mini big wheel. When the weather is good, there are barbecues or paellas.

Last year the Amsterdam Plage beach at Stenen Hoofd, to the west of the Central Station, was a huge success. This beach, right next to the Silodam, was laid on the age-old dike that projects far out into the IJ. It is smaller than Strand West but more popular because of its intimacy.

Another beach is Strand-Zuid, located at the back of the RAI Congress Centre, just south of the centre of Amsterdam. It has 2,000 m2 of sand, chairs, terraces, a beach volleyball field and there are showers. One can go there by a boat also, as there are places to moor your boat.

Towering above Amsterdam is the ?Green Boat? designed by architect Renzo Piano. It?s not a beach in the classical sense of the word, but one look at the palm trees, the large sandpit, the waterfall and the splashing Waterwonder and one can imagine that one is in the South of France, Spain or some other holiday destination.
